Acquired breast defects

They may be the results of injuries, more often consequences of breast surgeries and breast tumours. A part of the breast or the whole breast may be affected. In case of postinjury deformities and breast tumour postoperative deformities, you are entitled to a breast reconstruction surgery within your health insurance scheme. Specialized institutions, usually attached to plastic surgery clinics at university hospitals provide this kind of treatment.

Congenital breast defects

Inverted nipples or breast asymmetry are frequent defects in women. Asymmetry means that breasts are different in size or shape. A smaller breast (breast hypoplasia) or a larger breast (breast hypertrophy) or partial atrophy of a breast (ptosis - i.e. drooping breast). Breast appearance is also impaired by development defects in chest, ribs as well as backbone and arm conditions. All these defects may be partly corrected by breast size and shape modifications. Note, that plastic surgeries are recommended after physical development is finished in adolescence.

A condition of bilateral increase of the mammary gland, known as gynecomastia, may be encountered in men. The treatment, in case pharmacotherapy fails, includes plastic surgery under general, rarely local, anaesthesia. Mammary glands are usually removed during the surgery, or, if it is only a fat increase, the breasts may be simply treated by liposuction. The method and scope of the procedure depends on the level of a mammary gland increase and the amount of fat and skin in its surroundings.
